Dancing Mobulas

from €390.00

Taken in the Azores, Portugal. Atlantic.

Far off Santa Maria’s coast, a swarm of Mobula Tarapacana danced in the blue and engulfed me as I dove on scuba on the seamount named Ambrosio. Although it seemed as if they came out of nowhere their scars on their pectoral fins and bite marks told a different story. These wildly intelligent dancers made me feel like I was one of them as they witnessed me. Breathtaking awe. Silence.

This composition of counter movement, negative space and elegant grace underlines their particular aesthetic power.

These remarkable creatures are born into a life of constant movement and rely on water flowing over their gills to respire. The demand for their gill plates, which is believed to possess purifying properties, pushes them to the brink of extinction. As third most commonly traded ray species, they are sadly now listed as endangered. A crime to one of the most intelligent fish in the sea.
